The club was founded in 1979 by the Actonville community. The facilities were provided by the Benoni City Council (Ekurhuleni as it is now known). It was a nonracial club from the outset although administration was mostly in the hands of its Indian members. According to Cassim Suliman (former chairman), miners in the area as well as farmers from the Eastern Cape and teachers in Benoni played a pioneering role.

The club had a strong anti-apartheid flavour from the outset and was part of the United Cricket Board. A few members found themselves behind bars for taking part in the anti-Gatting Tour placard demonstrations at the then Jan Smuts Airport. When Vincent Barnes, the current head of Cricket South Africa’s High Performance Centre, joined Actonville Spurs in 1986 as captain/coach, the club had no junior teams. He was instrumental in organizing a six-a-side tournament to attract young soccer players and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. That was to be the start of a flourishing youth structure in the cricket section. Actonville Spurs was a founder member of the post-unity Easterns Cricket Union.

Actonville Spurs is currently in the process of redressing its structures to focus on youth development and re-establishing cricket in the area.

Actonvilles boundaries include our long serving partner, The Wattville Cricket Club. This is an important development initiative that we hold dear to our hearts at Actonville Spurs Cricket Club. Empowering and assisting our neighbors is of paramount importance and not only in the sporting arena but primarily in the name of brotherhood and relationship building.

PLAYERS

The Actonville Spurs Cricket Club prides itself on success and holds itself as one of the breeding grounds of some elite cricketers at provincial level not to mention stars that recently emerged on the international arena as well. These include players such as Jaco Booysens, Zander de Bruyn, Vincent Barnes, Neil Edwards, Faizel Kimmie, Ahmed Bhabha, Taahir Jamal, Yahya Seedat, Basheer Walters and Rushdie Jappie.

One of Actonville Spurs Cricket Clubs most recent contributions to the national setup is that of Imran Tahir. The Pakistan born Imran recently walked onto the international arena in the famous green and gold strip and it was a day of great pride and joy for all friends and members alike of the Actonville Spurs Cricket Club. He continues to dominate the spin attack and the recent call up to the Proteas of explosive Titans all-rounder, David Wiese is yet another example of the stars this club will help to develop.
